I'm very non-tech so hope this isn't a real stupid question. But........is there a portable midi player--orther than a laptop computer? I mean something akin to a portable cd player? Something that would let you play the midi tune and do some things such control the tempo, repeat certain bars, pharses on a loop etc.

Special k.
I have had a Kawai Sequencer model Q-55 for some years now.
It is the midi equivalent of a tape recorder except it records and plays back midi files on floppy disks.
I can attach it to my Yamaha PSR 292 keyboard which has midi in and out connections and either record myself or play back midi files on floppies. The tempo can also be changed with no change in pitch.
I imagine there are other makes of sequencer if you check it out at a good music store.
Maybe other forum members may have more knowledge of what is available at this time.
As I have a computer and music software and a CVP 209 I only use the Kawai seqencer when on vacation and have my small keyboard with me.
Hope this helps.
