What slows me down the most is in switching voices between Main, Layer and Left. The problem is in having to go to the main menu and use the LCD screen softkeys.

I think that Main, Layer and Left should be dedicated buttons, so to change a voice I can just press one of those three buttons and then the voice type button (i.e., Piano, Brass, Synth, etc.).

In addition, when you switch to a voice type, it should remember the last used in the particular range (Main, Layer or Left) rather than on a global basis.

To give an example, in the "Strings" voices, I like "Solo Violin" for Main, "Slow Strings" for Layer, and "Orchestra" for Left. And lets say I set each of these string sounds up for the three ranges.

Then I hit the piano button :PIANO: to play piano for a while. When I go back to strings by pressing the new "Main" button then the "Strings" button, the default should be the last used for Main -- "Solo Violin". Similarly, if I then press "Layer" and "Strings", what should come up was the last String sound used with Layer -- "Slow Strings". And if I then press "Left" and "Strings", the "Orchestra" voice would come up.

An even better solution would be to have three sets of voice buttons. One row would be for Main, one row for Layer and one for Left. This way, to change a voice would take just a single button press to get to that voice's screen.

I actually did the artwork for this once, and I was able to make all the buttons fit. If anyone is interested, I could try to find the graphic on my archive hard drive.

Hi lasershow,
you can solve your problem by storing your favourite settings with a style you want to play it with. Let´s take your example with Solo violin and Slow strings for right, Orchestra for left. If you have set all you want, you hit the OTS button 1,2,3 or 4, if you want this setting to connect with one of the stylevariations, lets say button 1 for Var1. Than you press the pianobutton and you now connect this setting with Var2 by pressing OTS2. Each time you´ve pressed the OTS button you have to store it with the style.
If you don´t want to play your setting with a style than you can store it as a Registration by hitting Reg. button 1 for the first setting, Reg.button 2 for the second setting and store this as a new Regbank.
Each time you want to play with your settings, you call up the style you have created now or the Regbank. You can put one of the three pedals for OTS up or Reg. bank up and one pedal for OTS down or REGbank down. Now you can play with you´re favourite settings without hitting any button in between by changing you´re setting with the pedals.
I hope you´ll get it!
Regards

Andreas, thanks for pointing this out. You are right, using Registration and OTS are useful ways to set up voices in advance.

I should have been more clear. I was suggesting a faster way to change voices for those who are "just playing around" or who don't want to go through the Registration setup procedure.

It is kind of like the difference between when one wants to just sit down and play for a while (I play mostly by ear) and when one wants to do record/playback and MIDI editing. One is "seat of the pants" and the other involves preplanning.

Both have their place, of course. I use Registration banks for my favorite arrangements, but I always like to experiment as well. That's why I'd still like a more direct way to change voices, rather than having to go through the main menu.

Thanks again for bringing up the Registration method!
