As a complete and utter newbie, I'm needing some counsel. My friend has a CVP 5(?) or 105 and has been told that the circuit board needs to be replaced. She was quoted a repair estimate of $200, and since this is a discontinued product, the replacement board will be a used part. My friend is willing to sell the keyboard to me for the cost of the repair.

The intended use of the keyboard is to introduce my three children to piano/music theory.

Would this be a good purchase?

Thank you for your advice!

Hi

There is a BIG difference between a cvp 5 and a cvp 105 not least it's age. If I remember correctly there is around 15 - 20 years between the two.

$200 is a lot of money and a working cvp 5 is only worth around $100. So, if it is a cvp 105 then it may well be worth it but NOT for a cvp 5.

I concur completely with MidiMagic. The CVP-105 is a VERY nice instrument and worth much more than $200. A CVP-5 wouldn't be worth it.

Thank you so very much, guys, for posting your advice.

I did confirm that the model is a CVP-5 and twenty-something. Now as a human, that's a nice thing, but not for a Clavinova.

The repair man seemed to be trying to pull a fast one as he first quoted an estimate of $200, then $260, and finally $290 with labor and taxes. It also seemed contrived that he just happened to have a spare motherboard -- which he claimed, "if I had to order the part, it would cost about $800, though you can't order this part 'cause it's not made anymore." So my friend paid the $65 estimate fee and packed her back up.

Now I don't know if indeed the problem was a faulty motherboard. The repair tech claims to have put his spare board in and the keyboard worked fine. But something just didn't seem right -- especially his manners!

I have the keyboard sitting on my floor with the hinged access top open. There's a beautiful array of circuitry in here! The thing powers up, but other than the "on" light, nothing else responds. I tried a factory default reset by pressing down the furtherest right key upon powering up, but there was no change.

Question: Is there any hope for getting this puppy up and running again -- or is this destined for the curb?

If it's simply a matter of plugging in a new board, I think I can handle that -- I've done hard-drive, memory card, and graphics card upgrades on my PC's. But can the part be found and can it be found cheaply at that?

Thanks for helping out!!!

Anyway just go to eBAY and do a search on "Clavinova".
