View Full Version : What's your favorite MIDI song?

Over the years I've collected tons of midi files. I've even listened to quite a few of them. Don't ask me why I'd collect them and not listen to them. But there's a few I keep handy to demonstrate the power of this fine instrument. Granted, not very many people understand that MIDI is not the same as playing a CD, so they're not impressed. I have to tell them that the instrument is "playing" every instrument note by note. Then they say "wow" and I still think they don't get it. Oh well...
My favorites include:
For lazy Sundays: Rhapsody In Blue & Spellbound Concerto (PSP-1973)
For party background music: David Lanz - From the Heart (OAC-1167)
For holiday listening: Selections From "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (PSP-3304)
I'm sure there's a bunch of us who can't impress our guests with a live demonstration - and so I ask... show me da midi!

I think it is especially dramatic when a well voiced midi is played on the CVP and revoiced to take advantage of the CVP's superior (to GM) voices!
Another one that is really great is "Hymn" by Vangellis
By the way the pdf sheets for it are currently posted on
alt.binaries.sheet-music
With this one, you can try out your favorite pads and the more eerie the better!

Not sure I would call it a favorite but something I was very impressed with.
A few days ago I downloaded "A Day In The Life" (Lennon/McCartney) from Yahama IDC. I was really impressed at the arrangement. If you remember from the Beatles Sgt Pepper albumn (or CD if you are not an old fart like me) that song had a huge orchastratal cresendo (I know my spelling is wrong on both of those words) in the middle, and a very long sustained decling E Major cord at the end. Who ever created that midi file did a marvelous job of capturing the original intent of the Beatles arrangement by George Martin.

Hi!
My absolute favourite for showing off the CVP has to be Blues of a Business Man. I believe it is a Celine Dion song? When I downloaded it it was a bit boring, but with extensive revoicing it became truly amazing. There are some electric guitar solos which make me cry every time, and people who hear it don't believe it is done by the CVP, but that it is an MP3 or CD we're listening to.

Not that this is (my favorite) song however,
from Classical Archives web site I downloaded a midi file
for Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.
I was amazed with my Clavinova's CVP 309 PE's
ability to play it. The sound was every bit, quality wise, as a cd recording. The pipe Organ's sound was flawless.
From Chopin to Art Tatum the Clavinova reproduction is flawless.
Have a great day!

Some of the good ones are actually freebees. Unfortunately I haven't found many of those (yet).
Hmmmm... If you wish hard enough, a little bird may come and whistle them in your ear.
... Or you could buy them. :D

Hi!
I don't remember where I found Blues of a Business Man, but I'm pretty sure I paid for it, so it's copyrighted. Although, can't a case be made for the fact that I made major revoicings, shouldn't that then make that particular version actually mine ... ?

My local library has several music books that I can check out. The library over in Portland (Multnomah County) has a HUGE library of music .... copyrights? So what's the point?
If I can borrow them at the library, and if I can bring them home and play them, perhaps scan them to a pdf file as "work sheets;" then somehow sending you the pdf file doesn't seem to be any different than telling you about this so you can do it for yourself.
There are several sheet music related various user groups around. Many users share their collections as requested among the user group members.
I buy a ton of sheet music from online and local music distributors. Most of the shared music is scanned to pdf or gif images. There is a side effect advantage to this format, as sheets, they all lie flat and page turning is MUCH easiier. Also, you can use sheet protectors and put them in a large ring 3-ring notebook binder. I hate books that automatically change pages before my hand can get up there and smack them back into place again!

Which of these groups would you recommend?
Also any similar recommendations for groups or sites with good CVP-friendly midis (e.g. ideally with suitable left/right tracks, chords, etc.)
Thanks!
