I purchased a good set of ear phones for my CLP 170 so that my wife could watch her TV without hearing my music. She told me not to use them. The sound of the keyboard action was more irritating than the music. Is this noise normal? My dealer says it is, but maybe he just doesn't want me to haul the piano back to him.

I don't know how much noise you are talking about. But, yes there is soft "thumping" noise when you hit the keys.

I would venture to say you would hear at least some noise from any keyboard from cheap toy to a real concert grand (with the strings magically silenced).

Yes, there is the noise of the hammer action. You can hear it very easily if you play the keys with the Clavinova turned off.

Other models like the Yamaha P250 professional stage piano exhibit lesser key noise due to better damping mechanism – but it is still audible.

The easy solution is to buy another pair of headphones for your wife. Then she could watch the TV and you could play the Clavinova and listen to your sources as loud as you wish without bothering one another.
