View Full Version : better USB device, lose the floppy

I love my CLP-170, especially the fact that the USB connection makes it a useful computer peripheral, but it's not the best-behaved USB device I've seen.
I'd like the memory to be directly available when you plug it into a computer, just like many USB memory keys or digital cameras. You shouldn't need a file utility to access the memory.
Also, it should accept memory cards - floppies are dead. Try to buy a computer with a floppy drive anymore.
And 1MB of internal memory is pretty stingy for a product at MSRP >$4k. You can get 128MB of flash for 10 bucks at retail.
As digital pianos go, though, it's dynamite.

On the newer CVPs all you have to do is hook up a USB hub and you can use just about any storage device you want. Does the CLP do the same? My CVP can recognize up to 20 USB devices.

Strange my CVP 307 only sees a maximum of 3 devices (ethernet USB, USB Floppy, and USB Thumb Drive). When I attach another Thumb Drive, it is not recognized. Only USB1 and USB2 show up - nothing beyond this.

On page 190 of my manual (for the 309 - yours is probably a different page) it says " Tabs indicating the connected USB devices (USB1, USB2, etc.) may be displayed up to USB20 for each device or partition. The numbers are not fixed and may change according to the order in which the devices are connected and disconnected."
Right above that it explains how to hook up devices. It says that the USB hub must be self powered. It also says it "does not necessarily support all commercially available USB storage devices. Yamaha does not guarantee operation of USB storage devices that you purchase".
I have hooked up to 5 devices - a couple of thumbnails and a multislot card media drive, plus the installed floppy plus my wirless adapter and they worked together.

No, the CLP is a client, not a host. I'm fine with that (I prefer to have a computer doing the computer jobs). I'd just like it to be a better client.
Beyond that, I really wish I could "drive" the CLP more from the computer (launch files to play from the computer, change voices, choose settings, etc.) rather than trying to manage everything through that little two-line interface. It's the kind of inscrutable user interface that causes so many VCRs to blink 12 all day.-bd

Hi Gary,
Just for your future reference, the manual for the CVP307 is identical to the manual for the CVP309.
If you look at the cover of your manual, you will notice that it applies to "CVP-309/307".
Unless, of course, the US edition of the manual is different to that used elsewhere in the world. ;)

Just looked at my cover and "Yes" it says 309/307 (and it covers the 309GP as well).
I am being extra careful because the last few days I have answered a couple of questions using functions and menus based on my machine that were different than that of the model the questioner had. So now I have gone in the other direction !!! I can't win  .
Time for me to take a deep breath and slow down. :D
