View Full Version : Yamaha Clavinova CVP-307 sound demos?

Hello,
I'm considering the CVP-307 towards Roland KR-107, and I need to hear some sounds from the CVP-307, but have no shops here with this model in.
If any of you could record a little sample for me, I would be very grateful - and perhaps endind up buying the CVP-307, if the sounds convince me. Otherwise, I think I have to go for the Roland KR-107 (which people say have better piano voice and feel).
I'm welcoming any hints and suggestions.
The voices I want to hear from the CVP-307 are mostly the Natural! voices - especially Natural! Cello. I can't live with the cello inside Tyros 2, for instance...
I hope someone has got the time to record a tiny demo - or perhaps just link me to a place I can find this sound. I haven't found any sound samples from Yamaha - only demo-material with the standard voices.

Hi,
Nice that I'm not the only one seeking for this! ;)
A piano sample (only piano sample), I don't think you'll find, but there's a in-general-demo-song (big one) here:
http://www.yamaha-europe.com/yamaha_europe/download/mp3/10_musical_instruments/clavinova/cvp_series/CVP_300/index.php?country=norway
It's a nice demo, but it doesn't show the Natural! sounds.
I don't know how they expect to sell their expensive Clavinovas if we shall not be able to hear it. If that's how they plan to sell them, I'm a bit worried... ;)
I hope there'll be some demos out here. Perhaps someone with a CVP-307 or CVP-309 (the same sounds) will be willing to share a song or a little demo-tune of the Natural! sounds - so that we can "join the club". :)

I sympathize with your problem, but unless you can experience the iAFC feature firsthand, I don't believe you will experience it from a sound clip playing on your computer.
I have used the cello voice on occasion. When played softly and with a light touch, it is just OK. If you play it more robustly, it sounds like a tape loop (almost like a skip on a vinyl record).
The piano sounds are outstanding and if you like the Roland KR-107, send me your hat, I'll eat it!

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I'm not wanting to experience iAFC. The Natural! category of sounds is not having to do with iAFC. These sounds are also available on CVPs without iAFC.
Natural! Cello is a voice I'll like to hear. Is this the one sounding like a tape, or is that the regular Cello voice? I do have the regular one in Tyros2, but not the Natural! Cello.
As for piano, you'll know what I mean if you compare the Natural! Grand sound with the Grand Piano sound. There's also a Live! Grand piano sound, but the Natural! is the best one, you know... :)
I'll end up with KR-107 unless Yamaha figures out it's time to show which sounds they've got in the Natural! category. I've been disappointed with Yamaha for a very long time now. I like many of the sounds, but unless they've improved on important fields, I have to go to Roland. However, the KR-107 is getting the best critics, it looks like, so perhaps it's just the best one - and that's why Yamaha won't show their sounds?
Well, I haven't made my mind yet... It would be nice to be able to be part of this group - if there was just a way to listen to some sounds.
Thanks for the efforts! :)

Hi!
I totally sympathise with you. I was looking for that as well, before I bought my CVP.
However, Ed is right - you cannot evaluate the sound quality from a sound clip shared on the web. iAFC aside, you're totally reliant on the sound system you're playing it through. If it's tinny laptop speakers it's not going to sound in any way like the real thing. If you have it hooked up to a high quality surround sound system, it is still not going to sound right because there are other equaliser settings - and most importantly, the file (MP3) is compressed which means you're missing all the extra noices that create the feel of the sound.
Nonetheless, I feel for you, so I have actually spent all day recording all the special sounds. Don't ask me to record all the other sounds as well... Unless you pay for it.
But DO NOT compare this to listening to a LIVE KR107. That is simply not a fair comparison. Either you compare live to live, or recorded to recorded. Anything else is like judging color quality in a movie by first watching it on a color TV, and then on a black-and-white TV. Don't kid yourself by doing that - always use fair like-for-like criteria when you're shopping around. You'll only fool yourself if you don't keep a level and objective, well informed head; otherwise you may regret it later.
Mega voices (http://www.box.net/public/static/rh465fni3m.mp3) (0.7 MB)
Cool voices (http://www.box.net/public/static/zhtlx4ncrr.mp3) (1.2 MB)
Sweet voices (http://www.box.net/public/static/btlyddnonl.mp3) (1MB)

Natural voices (http://www.box.net/public/static/tmk0130tpa.mp3) (2.4 MB)
Here are demos of the voices used together, which actually is more telling of the quality - the sounds have mostly been designed to be used with other voices;
Ballad (http://www.box.net/public/static/9d2ogm1yj9.mp3) (0.6 MB)
Big Band (http://www.box.net/public/static/6ermx75aig.mp3) (0.6 MB)

World (http://www.box.net/public/static/tufbm4m4zx.mp3) (0.6 MB)
And a little diddy I quite like that showcases a lot of the voices;
Happy Birthday (http://www.box.net/public/static/jdcv4lp3hs.mp3) (1.4 MB)
And since you specifically asked for the Natural Cello, here it is uncompressed:
Natural Cello (http://www.box.net/public/static/5oahfixt5k.WAV) (5.2 MB)
Finally as a bonus I just recorded this just for you to demonstrate how it actually sounds when you play the Natural Cello live (I'm using the left pedal to control the vibrato):

Hi Danny. For some unknown reason my Windows Media player will not play these clips... something about I don't have the right codec???
If anyone would know what the problem is... I'm betting on you.
Semi-techno-illiterate (another way of saying I'm too lazy to figure it out?)

Hi, dbjorck,
Thanks!!! What a wonderful gesture! :)
I'm extremely grateful to you for showing me especially the natural sounds.
I also completely know what you mean about comparing - you can't compare on different basis - then you'll be able to end up with literally anything...
However, I do know that iAFC is not possible to hear in recorded music on other speaker systems - and that WAV is better than MP3, but this really give me the kind of demonstration I was looking for. I just needed to listen to the Natural! voices. :)
Don't worry for me comparing ANYTHING live - it's not possible here... I can't touch any of these instruments, so I'll have to buy what I THINK is the thing I want.
I've now been listening to your recordings in MP3, but in AKG K240 Studio headphones - extremely good ones. I'll also play them through the extremely powerful sound system of my state-of-the-art Wersi Louvre organ (featuring the most amazing sound quality ever). This will probably give the demos more details (though they'll still be MP3 - doesn't matter).
I actually bought the Tyros 2 keyboard because I thought I'd combine it with my Louvre (which offers world class sounds), but I've come to see that I really want to play my second instrument, too - and if I get a piano model, i know I will do exactly that. The Tyros 2 is rarely used (though I thought I would play on it, however, but I just don't... Well, I've used it, but I'm not really connecting with this one - I think I really miss the piano).
I also note that you're playing the CVP-309GP (and excellent playing, too, by the way!) - the model I'm REALLY fascinated of in terms of look, too. Unfortunately, I don't have the room for two such large instruments.
I'm not sure yet what to choose, but knowing there's a usable cello inside the CVP-307 is definately helping! I do enjoy the styles by Yamaha - they're great.
I'm not a real pianist, but that's also partly the reason for wanting a piano - when I had one, I definately practiced a lot on it - and I did progress faster than on a keyboard. Of course, such things can't be compared.
I've noticed that Roland offers more for me when it comes to learning to play - perhaps. But I did own a CVP-206 once, and it was great (except that it was one model too low for me - used to 9000Pro, many sounds were missing and stuff) - scores in the display is a nice feature.
Back to the sounds - I'll now listen to the demos through the great sound system of the Louvre, and perhaps I'll just suddenly make up my mind! ;)
Thank you very much for the recordings - and I hope you understand I didn't mean to be bothering out here. I've only been very frustrated - but not on you - on Yamaha, of course. It's kind of unprofessional not to have a demosite for such expansive instruments as long as the dealers don't have them...
I'm very grateful for the help - and, of course, I don't wan't you to record the rest of the sounds - as being a Yamaha-player for years, I think I know them pretty well!
Thank you very much - have to listen now...

Hi!
That's weird - they have been recorded the same way as my previous clips in the Creations forum. They worked for you didn't they?
I have just tried them on two different PC's without problems, using Windows Media Player. They are normal MP3 files, so there should not be any Codec problems. Perhaps you have a temporary problem with your PC? Have you tried rebooting?
PS. I should clarify for everyone that I have a slight problem with my recording software as well, which causes especially loud bits to become muffled and boxy, and sometimes there are even clicking noices (the Swan clip has that for instance towards the end). So, again, these are absolutely not substitutes for hearing the real thing. Just guidelines.

Hi, both of you! :)
I noticed this problem with the VAW-file (cello), but not on the MP3s.
However - I've been struggling with some settings in the WMP for a while - some audio files suddenly just won't work. So I didn't think this had to do with the files.

Whatever the problem was opening the files... it went away when I tried again. Thanks for the great samples.
Danny... you are way too good of a musician to be working in I.S., though I'm sure it probably pays much better!

Hi!
Thank you, but I still think I couldn't have made a living from music. And I am very well paid indeed in IS (how else could I have afforded the 309GP :D )
By the way, I have rerecorded the Swan, and the sound quality is much better now, and there are no clicks at the end.

My dealer (now defunct) supplied a demo DVD of the cvp309gp. It was based on that, and hands on at the dealership that led me to buying this wonderful unit. That was a couple of years ago, and I haven't been the least bit sorry I did.
My previous digital was a Roland KR 570, which I still have. I would like to see it find a new home, though.

Hi,
Do you still have that DVD?
Is it possible to buy a copy of it?

Hi!
When I was shopping around I found several demos. However I've now deleted the links and the files themselves as well.
But I've looked around again, and I found at least the Yamaha demos (there were others done independently as well, but I can't find them now)
http://www.yamaha-europe.com/yamaha_europe/uk/service/040_downloads/20_downloads_multimedia/70_download_movies/index.php
This includes a demo of the CVP307.

I might have it, I don't remember if I sent it back to the dealer or not. I think you can ask any Yamaha dealer or even their support group for a copy. At least you could when I bought my CVP.
There is a whole seqence of DVD's, and you might say, the first one is free. It had a lot of the most significant bells and whistles discussed. Naturally, there was a lot of marketing hype also.
