I was wondering if anyone knew what new features the 2007 CVPs will have? I heard that a touch screen might be one addition.

I hope not. Who wants sticky finger marks all over the screen.

Who wants anyone with sticky fingers playing the piano period?

My problem with the screen isn't sticky fingers, its saliva. Apparently there is a certain amount of spitting while I am singing. Yes, it really is quite disgusting. I keep a paper towel dampened with mild glass cleaner nearby.

New Clavinovas in 2007? We'll see.

Hi!

I would absolutely adore a touch-screen, and was in fact led to believe there was one on the 309GP. It was my biggest disappointment when I saw that it didn't. I have a mobile with no buttons, only touchscreen, and similarly a PDA. Works like a charm.

The CVP user interface is not currently intuitive, much because they have to link screen real estate with buttons to the side, and there simply are too many functions to fit physical buttons in, so you have to go to all kinds of pages and press a button here and there and then on the other side of the screen and so on. To make it worse the screens aren't totally consistent. That could all be helped with a touch screen. Even without a redesign of the interface it would help.

And as said, if you have sticky fingers when you play, you are more likely leaking stuff into the interior between the keys. A touchscreen is more easy to keep clean, it is merely a bit of glass/plastic to wipe off.

Danny, you're right about the interface. But leaving dirty fingers on the screen doesn't necessarily mean that you're fingers are dirty. Even if you wash them prior to playing, you always have some natural grease or sweat (especially when you're playing with a lot of enthusiasm!) on your fingers which gets on the screen.
I used a PDA some time ago which always seemed to be dirty, even though I treated it with care. Also, using the supplied pen eventually caused scratches on the screen.

Hi!

A touchscreen is very sensitive, you don't need to push your whole palm onto it with all your strength like a rampant gorilla :D . I simply use the finger nail to lightly tap. No smudges and no scratches whatsoever.

PS. If the PDA's pen leaves scratches you have a poor quality kit, it's there to discourage you from using other pointers that could leave scratches. Similarly if you have to push hard with your whole finger, it is not a good touchscreen.

I've had touchscreens for close to ten years and as long as you tap lightly and use the nail as much as possible, there are no problems.

Maybe a comparison would be the self-checkin touch screen kiosks at airports. High volume use as well - probably more than a single CVP, well for most users anyway.

Anyone have problems with those?

Danny, the PDA I bought was made by Compaq and I bought it in 2001 or 2002. Thought it be a brand which made quality products.

Orbit, I have no experience with touchscreen kiosks, perhap anyone else?

Hi!

I've heard people complain of the quality in Compaq, although I believe it to be fair quality myself. As far as I know HP was able to buy Compaq very cheaply though.

Apart from touchscreen check-in machines, there are also touchscreen banking machines now, which get much more use than the CVP would.

The U.S. Postal Service has a great touchscreen service in their larger lobbies. Its worked fine and looked good every time I use it. No more standing in line at the window but I'm sure it will be S.R.O. at Christmas. Restaurant chains are using them very successfully as well. They put a plastic device over the CRT at some places. I suppose it is easier/safer to clean. The waitress punches in your order and it flashes on a screen in the kitchen. Great for inventory data.

Does anyone know if the new CVPs will include an attached dvd or cd burner like the new Kawai 177?

Currently no news about any new CVP's being released in 2007, or what their features might be.

This rumour was posted on wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clavinova

"Yamaha is rumoured to be bringing out the new range of Clavinovas in 2007, possibly based around 'Tyros2' technology, although this has not been confirmed by Yamaha as yet."

This rumour has kept me from purchasing a CLP280. I originally wanted a CVP309 but the price kept me away. Tyros2 would make me reconsider though.

Are some of the newer 'CLP' series closer to being CVP's?

Hi!

I don't think that is a rumor, but an unfounded speculation. A rumor would have some more substantial link to Yamaha.

We have speculated on this site many times about the next releases. And we have calculated that on average, it should be time for a new line by next year, based on previous release patterns. That of course does not mean it has to be 2007, it could be 2008, 2009, or even later. It really doesn't mean it would be called CVP4xx, they might even start a whole new line called XYZ or whatever. And Tyros 2 has been around a while, I would expect these years of further CVP development to have come up with something even better. Don't base your purchasing patterns on speculations that something MIGHT come out. Personally I don't expect the next line to be simply a Tyros2 in a CVP cabinet.
