I have a CLP 50 that I bought in 1986 when a neighbour started complaining about the noise I made playing my acoustic grand piano. It is not particularly portable but in the first ten years or so of ownership I used to carry it around in vans/estate cars to use at concerts I was accompanying. I stopped this after the keyboard fell out of the back of a van parked on a slope and the whole unit had toppled over at a concert while being assembled - I had to have a key replaced as a result of this, but other damage was only cosmetic. I was also concerned at the weakness of the telephone-style connections of the keyboard to the speakers and pedals, and the potential ease of damaging them 'on tour'.
I now use it at home connected by midi cable to a 1995 MU80 sound generator which expands the limited 16 note polyphony of the original to 64 notes and gives me non-piano sounds. Although keyboards on newer models have a better piano feel, this set up works well enough. When I was having the broken key replaced, I got the engineer to adjust the volume control so that when the slider was set to minimum, there was no sound from the CLP 50's speakers - there had always been a minimal sound which was irritating when using it with the sound generator linked to the CLP line-in ports.
I should be interested to hear of other user's experience with the CLP 50 (or other Clavinovas of similar vintage) and in particular, what repairs have been needed, and if anyone has had problems with the connections between keyboard and base.
