When I want to change (rerecord) a part of my song I can define punch in and punch out moment (when recording itself starts and when ends) but is it possible to start this song not from the beginning? For example, my song has e.g. 100 bars and I'd like to change my channel part only from 90th til 94th bar, why I have to play the whole song waiting til this 90th bar in order to rerecord my part, can I define (or rewind) this song to start from 80th bar or somewhere else during partial recording process?

Hi!

Certainly. Simply press the FF button until the bar you want to start at, before pressing the REC button.

Thx, I realized this very recently. I think that I tried this in past but always had some problems punchig in - problems of cutting sound before punching in (reverb, sustain) or after punching out. Now I know that I have to punch in at least 1 silent bar earlier.

Hi!

That cutting that you're getting is usually caused by the SYSEX commands that it adds automatically when punching in - it contains reset commands. If you delete the SYSEX commands after bar 0, this cutting will go away...

What kind of SysEx reset commands? What are they reseting? Why after bar 0 - why not bar of punching in?

When we speak about SysEx commands it seems that you're experienced with it. I have one question about Phrase Marks. As far as I know, Phrase Marks are just SysEx commands inside MIDI file that are used for logical separation of song into sections and can be exploited for quick jump. If you look at Yamaha's user's guide you can see that FF/REW can use this info for quick jumps. My question is how to insert this phrase mark into MIDI file? Maybe you have knowledge about how this SysEx code should look like.

Welcome back from your well deserved lunch and nap! ;)

Yes, of course it is enough to delete the SYSEX from the punch-in point. I've just gotten so used to deleting them all because I record a page at a time so I have a lot of punch-ins. And I have yet to notice any negative effects of simply deleting them all (after bar 0 - that's where the important stuff happens). Part of the reason for that is your other question; I do not know which reset commands it is that causes this clipping. But if you try my method you'll notice the results right away (it's been a recuring question on here as well, and this has always been the solution for everyone). I've asked the real expert in these matters, MidiMagic, who knows 102.73% of what there is to know of MIDI, this a couple of times as well, with no reply. If you can identify the actual command/s that cause clipping, you are king.

I've never used it myself, but the code for phrase marks is FF 7F 05 43 7B 03 dd 08 where dd is the setting, described in the Data List under Song Meta Event List. Generally with these things, it is easier to do a quick recording with the changes you want, and then check the result in the SYSEX tab.
