View Full Version : Don't ever turn off Clavinova while saving file!

Yesterday I deliberately turned off my CVP-207 while a file was being saved, because at the last minute I thought it was overwriting a file that I wanted to keep. NOT A GOOD IDEA!

For the next 10 minutes I turned my CVP-207 on and off again, and it would not even boot up! It just sat there displaying the opening screen, with no panel lights lighting, no sounds--NOTHING! I thought I had destroyed my Clavinova!

After about 15 minutes it did boot up fine and played OK--no problems. I had erased the "Color Quadrants.s745.bmp" file that is used as a background to the main screen, plus I lost a lot of registration files as well, and a few song files (not many).

Luckily, I had done a backup of the "Color Quadrants.bmp" file, my song files, and all my many registration files on several floppies, so nothing was lost.

Conclusion: DON'T EVER DO THIS! #2: Keep a backup floppy of everything, including the "Color Quadrants.bmp" file. It is possible that your power could go off in the middle of a save (but not likely, unless you live in the northeast, HA). #3: Yamaha has made an instrument that is rock solid, although for a few minutes I thought I was going to have to call Yamaha or my local dealer to bale me out, because I use this instrument every Sunday at my church.

I'm sorry I volunteered to be the Guinea pig for this experiment, but we live and learn in this life. Hopefully you won't do this!

Right now--go and make a backup of everything of floppies, including the "Color Quadrants" file, which could get erased. If you don't know how to do this, ask and we can tell you how.

I would certainly like to know how to backup any and all important files. I was not aware that operating files were accessible to the owner.

I am a recent CVP209 owner and I cannot find any reference to backing up files in the manual, at least under that heading.

Also as you can see I don't know how to include a quote in a reply...!

Thanks in advance, Ian

The only files that could ever get erased are the ones that are part of the USA Edition upgrade that the U.S. dealers are supposed to do. I do not know if those in Canada get the USA Edition upgrade or not.

From the main screen go to: Function button/Utility/Owner/Main Picture. If you are in the Preset area use the "Next" button go to the User area. You should see the "Color Quadrants" file there if you have the USA Edition upgrade. From there you can press "copy," then insert a floppy and use the Next button to go to the Floppy drive area. Then press "Paste" to make a copy of this file on your floppy.

You can also access this file from the main screen by pressing the "C" button, which takes you to the Score screen. From there go to "Setup" and "Background" to find this file. If you are in the Preset area use the "Next" button to go to the User area, then proceed as above.

In any section of the Clavinova, the only files that are erasable are in the User area only.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I followed your directions and those areas of my screen are blank (no files), so there must be a difference between the USA and the Canadian versions.

I emailed a copy of the page to my dealer/sale person for his comments. He has been very helpful with my queries so far, so it will be interesting to get his response.

This also happened to my 207. In my case it was a power glitch while I was playing. I noticed a lamp flicker off and on but it was so fast the Clavinova stayed on. Thinking that the momentary outage might have caused a problem I turned the power off. When I powered on again the Clav was frozen in the opening screen, (the gray screen with the crossed tuning forks and the owner’s name). The guide lights did not zip across the keyboard as they normally do on startup. When I recycled the power switch again, everything was back to normal with no loss of data.
This was kind of unnerving because 2 weeks before this episode, a friends 209 lost power during a save. In this case the Clav did not come back for weeks. She called the 800 number and the techy's there could not come up with and explanation. At that time there was a Yamaha rep at our Clavinova club who made a few phone calls to Yamaha and the decision was to try replacing a circuit board. When the technician came to replace the board, the Clav was still not functioning. As I understand it, he went out to get tools and when he came back the Clav mysteriously decided to fix itself and powered up normally. He did nothing to it and its still working.
It's hard to come up with a logical explanation for this. While puzzling over the friend’s problem, I considered a loose connector, but when the same thing happened to me I thought it unlikely that both units have the same loose connection. A software problem isn't likely to correct itself over an extended period of time, so it would seem to be a hardware problem.
Is there a possibility that it’s caused by a sticking relay, or maybe a kind of a “hysteretic effect”, (for lack of a better phrase) holding the relay in open or closed position. There is a relay the can be heard just after the opening screen and before the run of guide lights. I did not hear this relay operate when my Clav was frozen.
Here in Florida power outages occur often, and that “Do not turn the power off as data may be lost " message seems to take forever. I guess if it happens too often the only solution is an UPS unit which wouldn’t look so hot sitting next to the piano. In any case backups are definitely a good idea.
Any other ideas on this as to what could cause this?
Phil

CORRECTION to my "Backing Up Files" message above: You can also access the "Color Quadrants" file from the main screen by pressing the "B" button (not the "C" button), which takes you to the Lyrics screen. From there go to "Background" to find this file. If you are in the Preset area use the "Next" button to go to the User area, then proceed to copy this file.

However--still the best way to access this file is through the Function key as described above, because you won't be using the "Color Quadrants" file as a lyrics background, even though you could still find the file this way.

After spending big bucks for my CVP-207 and learning about the potential power failures living here in Florida, I bought an APC Back-UPS 350, battery back-up plus surge protection. The unit is designed for computers and is a little overkill for the CVP-207, but now if the power goes off while saving information the battery will kick in and I'll have time to finish the procedure. I'll also have power surge protection.

What's another $35 when you've paid big bucks for your CVP.
