A few months back, I went into the member rolls and deleted a whole bunch of accounts that were obviously spambot generated. That cut the list back to just about 4500 legitimate members. Since then, I've been very careful about approving each and every new membership request to ensure that it's a legitimate person and not a spambot account.

I didn't think we'd climb back up to a membership of 5000 anytime soon, but here we are at 5089! I'm astonished at how quickly the group is growing.

So, let me take just a second to remind our "guests" who might apply to become new members, that you must enter your location and at least one personal interest in the required field before I'll approve your membership. The spambots have gotten pretty clever at trying to fill out the required fields, but they still only enter a single word, such as "USA" or "London". I will delete these. If you wish to join, please enter your city, state or province, and country in the location field. That's the only way I have to know you are not a spambot.

Also, a reminder to everyone in the group, please remember to put the model number of your instrument in your signature profile. That will help us know what instrument you have if you're asking questions about a feature.

Thanks everyone! And thanks to those who have recently made donations to the CVPUG! It helps.

Hi Wally

Did you know there are 2818 members !!! with NO posts. Why not make it a rule that members have to make at least 1 post, even if it is only to say Hi.

Hi!

I endorse the proposal of Midi Magic.

I should also suggest that a member, in order to keep his/her membership, ought to produce at least one post per year.
In my opinion, a minimal threshold of activity seems reasonable to be requested as mandatory from any member.

Best regards,

Chuy

Don't worry, everyone would still be able to read, as guests. Besides, you even qualify for the once a year criteria. The point is that there are so many logins that never post; and that doesn't make sense. Since you can read the posts fine as a guest, you would normally only sign up if you want to post something. That indicates that these remaining ones may be spambots too and not real people.

Luckily we haven't had much spam attacks yet though (touch wood)

The spam attacks have been stopped because I personally delete the membership applications from the spambots. I get at least ten each and every day! Most from Russia.

I know that there are people who join our group who have no intention of posting. They lurk. But they still want to "belong." So I'm good with having people who join and don't post.

Hi!

Yes, it is clear that it is working, keeping the spammers out. I wouldn't change a thing at this point.

But I still find it curious that so many people join without posting. For lurking you don't need to join. Is there something about the site somwhere I haven't noticed that makes people think you have to join?

No, it's a psychological thing. I think some people feel like they want the ability to post, even if they don't have anything to say right now. Then they just never get around to posting.

There isn't any feature of the web site that you have to be a member to have access to.

Perhaps a lot of people just want to be part of a group of similar minded persons. Well you can't blame them: we have gathered such a nice group of people from all over the world here and we all just want to share our music or give each other tips to use our CVP to its fullest potential or advice people who want to buy one and we visit each at Christmas and buy presents for their birthdays and help each other mowing the lawn, etc. etc. I wouldn't know what to without it! :D
