View Full Version : Another headache

Hi!
I woke up with another headache this morning which won't go away. It's probably due to a thunderstorm approaching.
But as a result I only did easy tasks like sort through some old papers. In a pile I have for "to do later", I found this sheetmusic. I couldn't understand why - because I clearly remember having recorded it before, so I checked the piano; and it wasn't there. Thinking of it, I didn't remember having posted it here either.
So I started recording it. And then I soon realized why I had deleted it after recording the last time, and instead put it in the "to do later" pile. It is a piece that deserves the difficult kind of free recording, but it is quite difficult to get synchronised so I failed the last time. But I persevered anyway this time in spite of the headache.
This is the result:
Sheherezade - MP3 (http://www.box.net/shared/static/kthpuits0c.mp3)
Below is the MIDI - as usual please note that this will not play well on the PC, but is intended for the CVP.
Brgds

Hi Danny,
It was very nice listening to your interpretation of Sheherazade. Thank you for sharing.
In fact I would love to take a stab at playing it. I searched the Internet for the score but I only found the orchestral score. Where could I obtain the piano score that you have? Thank you.

Hi!
Very nicely played and very nice 4-hand piano transcription of the difficult first movement of the symphonic suite, containing many "improvisation-like" passages conveyed to the first violin (Sheherazade theme).
A few questions (I, too, get sometimes a headache after listening to your creations... :D ):
(1) Who is the author of the transcription?
(2) How did you record the piece?
(a) first the whole Secondo part, then the whole Primo part;
(b) first the whole Primo part, then the whole Secondo part;
(c) either, little by little.
(3) The sound of your piano is much better than the standard GrandPiano1. I remember you managed to emulate a Steinway sound by means of custom settings. Did you use those settings or others?
In any case, congratulations again!
Lastly, I hope some Scandinavian breeze, relic of the thunderstorm you mentioned, may fly southwards to Mediterranean latitudes to mitigate the 35° Celsius temperature we have been having in Rome for two weeks...
Best regards,

Thank you. The score is from a great CD with zillions and trillions of fourhanded music on, which I certainly can recommend - extremely good value for money. Very cheap. They make loads of other score CD's as well. You can find them all at http://www.cdsheetmusic.com/. This one is called Piano Duets: the Ultimate Collection. Over a thousand pages for less than 20 dollars!

I'm sorry to hear that. I record to give people enjoyment, not headaches...
(1) Who is the author of the transcription?
According to the first page, Rimsky-Korsakov himself made this arrangement.
(2) How did you record the piece?
(a) first the whole Secondo part, then the whole Primo part;
(b) first the whole Primo part, then the whole Secondo part;
(c) either, little by little.
c. For each section of the piece I recorded either primo or secondo first depending on which one had the rhythm. Mostly secondo, but for for instance the "improvisation style" bits it was primo.
(3) The sound of your piano is much better than the standard GrandPiano1. I remember you managed to emulate a Steinway sound by means of custom settings. Did you use those settings or others?
Yes, it's the Steinway sound. I basically only use that now. And I increased reverb for primo, giving it a more floating effect against the more precise bass in secondo.
In any case, congratulations again!

We have had unusually cold and bad weather for weeks now. It is only 17 degrees now. Usually it is well into the 20's by July. It is probably this current temperature difference between southern and northern Europe which is causing the pressure problems and my headache.

Of course I was just joking...and being victim of my curiosity...
Thank you for your generous explanations and please take care of your health!
All the best,
Hi Danny,
When I listened to your interpretation of Sheherazade I imagined myself playing it on the piano. For some reason I thought it was twohanded score. When I realised that it was fourhanded I was disappointed because it meant recording rather than playing. Then Carlo posted, in another thread, that the IMSLP site has opened again, and there I found a twohanded score.
I was thrilled because now I have a twohanded score I can attempt and I can also use your interpretation as a guide on how to play it. Isn't life great?
Thank you and Carlo very much. You made my day.
