View Full Version : CVP Recording NOT Playing on Roland

I have made recordings to disk of songs my wife has played, but when I try to play them using a Roland or Kawai they don't play.

Now I know someone will ask why would someone want to do such a thing. Well, my wife is learning to play chords, but the store offering the lessons has only the "lesser" brands of digital piano. The instructor likes to have the student do the different set ups at home and then record them for class. Not only is he teaching how to play the chords, he is also teaching how to use the features of a digital piano. When we try to play what's been recorded at home on the CVP-207, the other brands won't play the disk.

I thought MIDI was MIDI, but something is not working. Anyone have a solution?

Thanks,
Wes

Hi

It is, and it isn't.

You are right by saying midi is midi but each intrument has extra voices within them.

My guess is that you have used some of the "live" "cool" etc sounds from the 207 which use BANK numbers.

When midi first came out it was very BASIC and keyboards/pianos now have more sounds then the basic midi allowed.
Every instrument will have the basic sounds and these are changed by using a "Program Change" command. For the other sounds we need to use a "Bank Command" as well.

Now, although the Roland will read the Program Change command chances are it will NOT use the same BANK commands.

If it does not understand the bank command it should at least strip off the bank part and just use the Program change command.

What do you mean by "won't play"?
Does it read the disk?
Will it play back ok on your CVP207?
Does it play but with the wrong sounds?
What Roland is it?

Hope some of that helps.

Thanks for your interest, but the problem was user error. Of course I'd rather blame it on the Kawai or the Roland, but in truth it was lack of knowledge on how to use the other machines to get them to play the MIDI file my wife recorded on the CVP207. That's it, I'll blame it on my wife since doesn't read any of the posting.

Thanks Midi Magic for your response.
