I just recently attempted to connect my laptop to cvp403. The message on the display screen says (IP address unknown). I am not very good with ins and outs of computer set up. Is this something simple to find/enter? I would like to get on designated site and see what it has to offer. Thanks:)

Can you explain exactly what you did ?
How did you connect your laptop with your CVP ? With en ethernet cable ?
How is your laptop connect to Internet ? Via wi-fi ?

We have wireless in house. I connected with cable from laptop to cvp which is what I thought I needed to do. I sent question to Yamaha instrument support. I didn't fully understand the need for router connection. I have someone who will run a line from router directly to cvp403 for me and I should be good to go. Thanks!

What you are trying to do is not the simplest way, but it still possible. I suppose you use Windows on your laptop. If so, you have to "share the internet connection", it means that you must explicitly tell Windows to allow other computers (or your keyboard in this case) to use its Internet connection. I'm not a regular Windows user so I can't explain you exactly what to do, but searching "windows xp share internet connection" under Google should help you.

Another thing : if you use a cable between 2 computers (your keyboard acts as a computer of course), you need a crossover cable, not a straight-through cable.

The simplest way is to connect your keyboard directly to Internet, e.g. on the wifi hotspot which is providing wireless.

For what purpose are you trying to connect your laptop to your CVP? The only possible reasons to do this are if you wish to transfer files (MIDIs, STYLES, REGS, etc) back and forth from your laptop to the CVP. Or, you are trying to play MIDI files that reside on your computer but you want them to trigger the CVP and play on it. I am a Tyros 3 owner and these are the only functions that Yamaha permits. In fact, I am not even sure if a Yamaha CVP is capable of transferring files directly from computer to CVP via a USB cable. On the Tyros, you must hold down the Music Finder button while pushing the power button to turn it on and put the keyboard in HDD, hard disk drive mode. I don't think a CVP has this feature.

If you are trying to play computer MIDI files on your CVP via USB cable, you need to download and install the appropriate Yamaha driver on your computer. It came with your CVP, of you can get it at Yamaha's website.

Finally, if you are trying to make your CVP browse the web and go to different web site, forget it. Your CVP can only go to one special Yamaha website called IDC. That is Yamaha's site wher you can browse and buy MIDI files, styles, etc. It is interesting, but not that interesting. And it's slow on your CVP. Plus, it is VERY particular about how you connect your CVP to the internet. You must have a router, wired is easiest. You need a long CAT-5 cable to plug into the CVP and into the router. You MUST NOT be using strong encryption on your router such as WPA. Yamaha only allows WEP protection which is old and outdated. If you are attempting to connect wireless, good luck. Many people struggle with this. It requires special adapters that are rather old and not all that easy to buy. Here is a link to Yamaha's info and help. I hope the link works for you:

The easiest way - connect your CVP-403 to router with network (UTP) cable. Your router has to have DHCP server turned on (it should be turned on by default).

Connect your laptop to your CVP via USB cable ("host" USB connector bellow keyboard, not USB connector in front of keyboard). You'll have to install device drivers that come with keyboard.

Almost true, actually you can connect to different site if you install your own proxy server between your keyboard and Internet and route your keyboard through your own proxy. Then keyboard always wants to connect to the "IDC" and proxy routes this request to whatever site you want. You can find my explanation about all this and how it has been done on this forum from several months (if not years) ago. Of course this is not for beginners.
