My son has a problem with the above clavinova which I hope someone
will be able to help me with.
When he puts a disk into the clavinova he is asked if he wants to
format the disk. The answer is invariably 'no' because on the disk
is material he wishes to keep. He just wants to add to it. If he
presses'yes' to the question the disk is erased, and if he
answers 'cancel' then he is back to square one.
Can someone help? Thanks!
:p

Hmmm, I've never seen this problem. How was the disk initially formatted? You might try formatting a disk on the CVP, and then copying the files from the other disk onto it from a PC and see if you have any luck.

It's possible that the CVP-103 will recognize only the older Double-Density disks (marked with a DD), rather than the newer High-Density disks (marked with an HD--holds twice as much data). ClavinovaGuy is right--have your CVP-103 format the disk (try both the DD and the HD kind), then take the disk out of the Clavinova and copy the file(s) via computer from the disk you are wanting to use to the one just formatted in your CVP-103.

Your CVP-103 manual will tell you which kind of disks to use. If you don't have a manual you should be able to download one in .pdf format from the Yamaha website.

This could be happening because:

a) the disk is corrupted/damaged and the CVP cannot read it - hence it assumes it is a brand new (unformatted) disk and asks if you want to format it. I suggest you verify this by trying to read this disk using your PC - and if you have files on the disk you want to keep - use this opportunity to make a backup. If the disk is good, then insert it into your Clavinova. If it still asks you if you want to format the disk - then possibly the Clavinova disk drive has a problem (see (b)). At this time, since you have made a backup of the disk contents - you may want to "take the risk" to see if formatting will fix the problem.

b) problem with Clavinova disk drive - try inserting a disk into the Clavinova that you know is fine. If you encounter the same problem, it could mean that the disk drive is not working properly. In which case you can try cleaning it using a disk drive cleaner or if that doesn't work ... you probably want to call a technician.

Remember that whenever you format a disk this automatically erases all of the data on the disk for sure. ALWAYS backup the data first somewhere (I like to keep two backup copies).

You will not ever get a file on a disk to play by reformatting the disk, because the file will then be erased.
