Hi, on my CVP 309, I'm looking for a sound for the left hand (bass) that is piano but with a "bass" sound, it's hard to describe, but the sound is like that of the "chorus bass" mixed with "grand piano" on a Roland RD700 (that probably doesn't help since this site is for Yamaha!), or like when you increase the bass when you play a cd. I don't want the bass/left hand to be louder, just "a bassier piano sound". Does anyone have any ideas? Many thanks.

Hi!

Well, off the top of my head, not entirely knowing what you want to achieve or how much you know about the possibilities of the CVP, you can try increasing the Low Gain, and/or layering a bass voice with a lot of Chorus with a piano sound.

Hi Danny, it is possible to explain briefly how to do those two things that you suggested? Many thanks.

Hi!

To increase Low Gain, select the voice most like the one you want. Say MellowPiano for instance. Now Press Sound Creator. Go to the Effect/EQ tab. Move down to 3, EQ. Increase Low Gain there to the point where you want it. If that isn't enough, decrease High Gain as well. If that still isn't enough, move to the Sound tab and decrease Filter Bright. (Depending on the voice you've selected and the other settings you've changed, you may want to decrease Filter Harmo as well.) If you do all of these to the max, you'll get a sound that sounds more like a soft electric bass guitar than a piano. You can save this voice for future use by pressing the Save button and giving it a suitable name.

My second suggestion was prompted by your mention of mixing "chorus bass" with "grand piano". I don't know what sound you're imagining, an actual sound bite from the Roland would have been good. But for "chorus bass", you can select a bass voice most like the one you want, say SubBass. Press Sound Creator again, and move to the Effect/EQ tab. There under 1, you can increase Chorus Depth. Under 2, DSP, you can enhance the Chorus effect even more, by selecting a Chorus effect under DSP Type Category. Return to 1 to increase DSP Depth to your liking. Now press Part Select Right 2, select your desired piano, and go through the same thing. And for both, you can also use the Low Gain method above to continue deepening the effect.

Finally, you can also use one of the 3Band Eq DSP effects on these voices to further increase the punch effect.

Thanks for your comprehensive instructions Danny, I will try it this weekend. As you probably realise, I'm not that familiar with the full capabilities of my CVP309PE, I will let you know how I get on. Regards, Darren.

Hi!

This is the place to learn! But it must be remembered that there is no exact instructions, as sound is highly subjective, everyone has their own tastes. And it will all sound different anyway depending on the environment the piano is in, and the model of the piano of course. So one must be prepared to spend some time experimenting until it is right for you. Then you can save the sound for future use.
