View Full Version : Internal Memory Questions

To anyone--In another thread I was just discussing the internal memory of the CVP207 and CVP-209 (4 MB). I assume this is like writing photos to a memory card in a digital camera, as it is referred to as "flash memory."

I notice that do we not refer to this as a "hard drive." I assume that there are no moving parts to this memory, just writing data to a chip or memory bank. Is this correct? Or should we refer to this as a "hard drive?"

Since I can buy a 128 MB Sony Memory Stick for $60, why can't Yamaha give us more memory? Do you think that we will ever be able to update the memory bank available in our Clavinovas?

Any other comments along this line would be appreciated by all of us.

Hello

There is a way to use smartcarts
youll need to install a cartdrive under your flopydrive
have a look at this page youll see what i mean to say.

Dear friends,

I was ready to ask a similar question about how we can have more drive space for our songs - not in CVP internal memory but in removable media. It sounds good that we can have a memory stick or somerthing similar. The site proposed refers to PSR models and I don't know if this can apply for Clavinovas. If somebody knows how we can have additional space on removable media (not just floppy) or how a HD can be used for Clavinovas (not through MIDI connection), please give your proposals to this forum.

Thanks

Hello

I'm new in the clavinova world and to tell you the truth I would not have bought a cvp if there was no usb connection
The memory issue i can solve with connecting my laptop to the cvp 208
It is a strange thing, why yamaha is so cheap on memory devices
my almost 9years old korg trinity pro x 88 (same pricerange as the cvp208) had a 512 mb scsi harddisk, could connect zipdrives etc.
in the 80's I ouwned a Yamaha V50 FM synth.
On top of the fddrive it had a memorycard slot. So this old fossil did relativly better in the memory department.
But it's the sound that stole my heart and ones I played the cvp in the shop. I was sure it would keep me happy for 10+ years.
Has anybody ever tryed a usb memory stick ?? probably will not work due to lack of the drivers in the cvp.

Kind regards

Eric

I really am not running out of memory space on my CVP-207 yet, but just asking a few questions here for all of us.

1) I assume that I CANNOT use one of those adapters that fits into my floppy drive that contains a Compact Flash card, Smart Media card or Sony Memory Stick, because these must have a driver in order to be recognized. Am I correct here? Are there any devices that go into a floppy drive (containing a memory card) that DO NOT REQUIRED A DRIVER available anywhere, and would one of these work? If so, which one?

2) Since I own a CVP-207 (no USB port like the CVP-208), could I hook one of the connecting devices (someone tell me the correct name) into my CVP-207 computer hookup ("host out" port?) which has a USB connection on the other end (designed to hook my non-USB port Clavinova to a computer), then connect it to one of those portable memory devices that go into USB ports that you can carry in your pocket or on your keychain (32, 64 or 128 MB) that do not require a driver?

Sorry to be so vague about the correct names for everything!

Thanks for your replies.

Hi Richard

WHY DO YOU WANT MORE MEMORY ?

1) I assume that I CANNOT use one of those adapters that fits into my floppy drive that contains a Compact Flash card, Smart Media card or Sony Memory Stick, because these must have a driver in order to be recognized. Am I correct here?

Yes you are correct. I have such a floppy drive and have tried it out myself.

Are there any devices that go into a floppy drive (containing a memory card) that DO NOT REQUIRED A DRIVER available anywhere, and would one of these work? If so, which one?

I would not think so as the OS is looking for for a floppy and not just memory.

Again NO. Think about it. A USB memory stick plugs into the computer. Not the device. It would be like pluging the memory stick into the back of a camera.

As far as I know, the Host Out is a serial port designed for those who don't have a Midi out on the PC.

Thanks, Midi Magic for your response.

No, I really don't need any more memory space. With 4MB of flash memory I have used only 1 to 2 MB of it total, so all is fine. It is just a case of making sure I don't run out of space, I guess. I do have plenty of floppies on hand if that happens.

One thing I have noticed is that as you create more and more registration files, each time you change something on one and overwrite it with a changed version, the time required to save it (where you get the message to not turn off your Clavinova) becomes longer and longer.

I now have about 60 registration files (one for each Sunday, as I use my CVP-207 for contemporary worship at my church), and the "overwrite" time is now about 15-20 seconds, whereas it used to do it in about 5 seconds.

What I need to do it to move many of these older files to a floppy and delete the originals in my User drive.

I wonder why it takes longer to overwrite one file when you have so many of them? Does it take longer for the Clavinova to find the right one? Or does it overwrite the entire flash memory bank each time (which becomes larger as you add more files)?

Hi Richard

The real answer is................I don't know. Unless it is because it does not defrag like a pc does and it is putting little bits of file here there and every where. Or, as you say it does do a defrag each time and if you delete something then it moves every thing up do make room the the new file.

I only asked because I use my PC to play back all of my PianoSoft and Midi files from the PC, via midi. This saves me having to find the right floppy when I need it.

Hi,
maybe I'm posting this under wrong thread, but I'm wondering how you don't have problems with the memory of your CVP ? If you have plenty of midis and hundreds of styles and you need quick access to them and not searching through dozens of floppies to find the certain one.... I would prefer a hard disk for all my music datas for quick access. Now I know that I can't have a Hard disk with my CVP. At least I hoped that we can have a memory card connected somehow with our floppy. I'm afraid that this is also difficult .
Now, as I have my CVP207 connected to my PC through the midi cables of both, I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or maybe I don't know something about this connection. As I mentioned, I have hundreds of styles but they are useless if I don't copy them on a floppy and insert the floppy in CVP. Is there a method that I can have the style stored on my PC playing, but following my accords played with my left hand on CVP ? If yes how can this be done and also how I can easily edit a style in my PC (which s/w ?)

Thanks

HI

I beleve this is not possible
The style has to be in the cvp in order for it to work
I always beleved that the 207 came with some pc software to tranfer songs, styles, voices etc over the midi channels.
