A friend sent several style files to me and they all have the same .psr extension. Is it possible for me to alter the files in some way so that my CVP 205 will be able to read them?

You can just change the file extension from .psr to .sty on your computer and the styles should play. However, if they are from a newer Yamaha keyboard (your 205 is pretty old), the styles probably contain a lot of voices that won't be on your 205. They won't sound right, parts might be missing completely, etc. But, you should try it because it will not cause any harm what so ever to your 205.

Many thanks Tom I have just done as you suggested and it all worked OK. The only problem I had was that on some of the styles when I tried to load them onto my CVP205 I got the message "this file is too large to load" but I have still gained a tremendous number of styles

Oh, yes. I forgot that over time, Yamaha increased the file size of its styles to accomodate new voices, etc. The older Yamaha keyboards are stuck with loading only the smaller sized files. Still it gives you a lot of new fun styles to play!

Hi Cminor
Have a look at this site:
http://psrtutorial.com/MB/bedesem.html
Michael P. Bedesem has written some fine programs around the style files for Yamaha. He did have a program that would convert old to new and new to old styles.

Also try this one

Just have a GOOD look around this site for a wealth of info on styles. You could even find some Tyros styles.
If you realy want to see just what goes on onside a style file then download the "Style Files - Introduction and Details" pdf file at:
http://www.wierzba.homepage.t-online.de/stylefiles.htm

Thanks Tom as you say my CVP205 has only the ability to save smaller size but I do now have at least double the number of styles that I had a few weeks ago.
Thanks to MidiMagic as well the sites that you pointed me to have taught me more about styles than I had learnt in the past 10 years.

You're welcome, Cminor. And the link That MidiMagic posted to the programs by Michael P. Bedesem would allow you to play the newer, larger styles in your CVP. He has a free program that reduces the style file size.
