Can someone furnish a recommendation or two on how best to learn to play the Clavinova----- using disk/books, lessons etc. for someone interested in jass and bluegrass? I'm snowed by the info in the Yamaha Music Catalog 2003. What disks to purchase

I'm a 77 year old retired engineer, computer literate, intermediate piano player (know chords, can read music---and with a lot of effort can play stuff). I play for my own enjoyment-.

I have ordered a cvp207. I've seen no books or videos----except the Music Soft Catalog-------have heard very a accomplished salesman play the 207 and fiddled around on the 207 a little.

Thanks

Hi Ray—

Start with the Yamaha "Quick Start" video (call Yamaha if you did not get one with your CVP-207). Then buy the two instructional DVDs (get the DVDs—not the video tapes) at:
http://www.miditainment.com/videos.html#Anchor-49575

Also, see my message at:

http://www.cvpug.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59

And, of course, check this CVPUG forum every day!

Wilson--Thanks for the tips. I plan to use them.

Re: Buying used disks and/or books.

In your judgement, is this a good idea?

Ray--

Buying used disks and/or books? Sure, as long as the books and disks still play OK on your Clavinova.

The best MIDI books and disks are the book/disk combinations written by Yamaha artists and published by Hal Leonard. The "Cue Time" ones will challenge you the most, because they will wait for you to respond (by playing the right note), instead of just going on without you. They then reward you by playing the orchestral accompaniment along with your playing.

You would buy these two DVDs at MIDItainment (no books needed):

Go to the MIDItainment web site and click on CLAVINOVA DVDS at the top. When you do this it will then be the two DVDs at the top of your screen.

CVP 200 Series Volume 1 DVD:
Exploring Voices, Styles, Effects and more.
Code: CVP200V1DVD
Price: $28.95 + shipping

CVP 200 Series Volume 2 DVD:
Song Playback, Recording, Editing and more.
Code: CVP200V2DVD
Price: $28.95 + shipping

You can also buy them as VHS videotapes, but I recommend the DVDs (much easier & faster to find sections; better audio & video quality; can do freeze frame stills to study & take notes; DVDs don't wear out; etc.).

Most highly recommended for all CVP-200 users (I need to become a Yamaha salesman!).

I still get mine out and review them often, after one year of owning them.

There is a 4-minute preview of a MIDItainment Clavinova instructional DVD at:

You'll need RealPlayer to view it.

Wilson--Thanks for info------I haven't been able to locate the info you mentioned--but I plan to keep trying.

I'm having a lot of trouble using the accompaniment capability of the 207 both with the preset songs or from my new song seletions-----

I plan to solve this someway------

---but after I come back from a skiing trip to Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada--around Feb. 1. I'm 77 ------this is our (wife) 28th straight year going to the Laurentians--wife does not ski but loves the ambience-----I love to ski and plan to continue until I get a direct sign from God that I should quit--we'll see how that works out.

I plan to get disks and/or books or pay a teacher (if I can find one) who is familiar with the 207 to sit down with me for 3-4 hours.

If you do not have the (free) RealPlayer, nothing will happen when you click on the above link. You must get the RealPlayer first, and then click on the link.

I followed r_d_wilson's advice and purchased the two Clavinova instructional DVDs after previewing the first one via miditainment's website. I'm only about 20 minutes through the first DVD but overall they explain things well so that even if you are not a computer expert, you should be able to understand how to use the functions available. Sometimes the explanations may seem a bit hokey to me because I deal with computers and digital technology at my day job, but considering how little I know about the MIDI domain, I still think there is considerable value in those DVDs. (also available in VHS)

Now I just need the time and discipline to watch the rest...

Thanks for the recommendation.
