Hello All and Happy New Year!

As an owner of an old CVP-79a, I am very confused about the voices on later CVPs. Thinking I might upgrade, the other day I went into a store in Connecticut and played what must be a top CVP - It looks like a small grand piano. But I simply could not get the beautiful voices I have on the 79a - the non-zero bank "sweet" voices, like the orchestra and violin 1. (i.e. patch 49, bank 115 or patch 41, bank 112) When I put a disk with my old CVP tunes into the drive, they sounded TERRIBLE! I could not get even a good clarinet.

As I remember, there were so-called sweet voices or something like that on the new machine, but they sound bad too. The sales person did not really seem to know what he was doing. So I am wondering: Are there equivalent voices somewhere on the top CVPs today and how do I fine them?

I have been doing some composing for a local PBS station - and I can give the 79a sounds directly to the engineer to incorporate and air as is. I can't imagine that the latest machines don't have even better voices somewhere. But where? There is no way, if I were to upgrade, that I could use many of these latest voices for pro work.

Any suggestions?

Hi

The older cvps used a different voice map to the new ones.

All you need to do is remap the voices and it will sound better then the original.

This is not too hard to do unless you have used the drums. To re-map all of the drums is a real pain.

If you would like to send me the files I will have a look for you BUT I do NOT want to get involed with the drum track. So if you have any with out drums or you can live without the drum track then send them over.

There is also a program that will playback older cvp files.

Thanks for the reply!

Remapping shouldn't be a problem, especially since I have stuff saved files saved as Cakewalk projects as well. But what I don't understand is what voices I would remap to. When I play my Clav, for example, I sometimes will use a dual voice setup of Orchstr and Violin1 and, working with the sostenuto pedal, can get a pretty realistic orchestra rendition of some of my pieces live.

Oh man I hate web-based message boards....Wish we were on the Usenet here

to continue my unfinished message....

According to Dennis Stanfill at Yamaha (whom I talked to some years ago), those voices were sampled in a differenet way than the general midi voices - ie: they have the vibrato, etc. Are there equivalent voices on today's Clav for those? On the latest Clav, if I dual voice Orch and Violin 1, it sounds horrible played from the keyboard - certainly not anything I could use for pro work. The old numbers again (in case you know the CVP 79a) are patch 49 LSB 115 and patch 41 LSB 112. If I could just get a decant sound off the keyboard for these, it might give me a clue and show me what to remap to.

Thanks again.
