I am a beginner to music and have been taking lessons for several months. My teacher, (so far) is teaching me to learn songs and play by ear.

Now that I have a CVP-208, I had my teacher record my new song this week on my 208, with the melody and cords on seperate tracks.

My question is should I allow myself to see the follow lights to help me learn the song, or should I do so only by hunting out the notes by ear?

What would be the plus or minus of either method?

I appreciate the points of view.

I would recommend developing your ear to the best of your abilities, and not growing dependent on the lights. I think the lights could be a great tool for learning, particularly if a piece contains difficult chords or passages. But I would try to learn without them, and use them as needed to fill in the blanks. JMHO.

...thanks for your thoughts.

I think my instructor is not too keen on the lights at this stage.

Thanks again...
