Hi fellow CVP'ers,

I have a question regarding a midi playing on my PC and then on my CVP. I downloaded a midi to the PC then used some midi software on the PC to listen to it to see if I wanted to bring it over to my CVP. It sounded good so I saved it to a diskette and loaded into the CVP. However when I played it on the CVP the only channel that played was the drums.

All my other midis seem to play all recorded channels on both the PC and CVP. However the ones I got from this website look like they are of a different format even trhough the end in .MID

Has anyone had this happen and if so what can I do to convert it to a format that will allow the CVP to play all channels?

Hi

It sounds like they are using BANK voices. Now the PC does not have any banks so it just plays the normal voice numbers.
However the CVP can use Banks and if it sees a Bank command then it will select it. If then it does not have a voice there then it will play nothing.

When the midi is playing back, go to the Mixer Console and keep pressing it until you come to the tracks 1 - 8.
There you will see which instuments are playing.

You should have a little red box around the voice of track 1. Press the 1  button and it will go to the voice page. Select a voice you want to use and it should start to play.

In the long term you will need to remove or change the Bank commands. This can be done using the Song Creator function.

Press Digital Recording - Song Creator - then TAB along until you reach the 1-16 page.

In there you will see the Bank commands.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF THE FILE FIRST just in case

If all else fails send me the file and I will fix it for you.

Thanks for the reply. I guess it's true you learn something everyday.

When I followed your instructions and when the red box was around channel 1, I moved the up arrow and selected piano and I heard that channel. I assume that I will have to do that for each track I can "see" that has an instrument on it. So that part worked (Yea!)

Now as to the second part I am a little (well very) confused. I got into the song creator channel 1-16 and I saw what you are referring to as "bank commands". You suggested I change or remove them. Can you expand on that a little. Here is an example of one of about 10 lines I am seeing.

007:4:0000 Note E1 69 0000:0544

Looks like greek to me. Can you explain what these fielsd represent? Or can I simply delete them and have the CVP decide what to play? Deleteing them sounds like the easier way if I can do that.

I can e-mail you the midi if you tell me where to send it. If you look at it then maybe you see what I am trying to explain better.

Thanks again

Hi

Well done so far. As you say it is all greek, well it is realy Midi speek for playing the piano.

0070000 Note E1 69 0000:0544

Looking at the above 007 is the Bar number in the song.
0000 is the position within the bar.
Note E1 69 means turn the note E octave 1 on with a volume of 69. as so it goes on................

Send the file to at magic_midi @ hotmail.com

without the spaces. And I will fix it for you.

Hi Sam

How are you doing with all those midi numbers?

Did you get the file ok?

There are a couple of computer programs that the newest versions have a glitch when putting in bank select messages. These programs put in the bank number as the MSB. MSB's are to be 000. If you have a 200 series, you should load the file, press Digital Recording, use the NEXT button and select the 1-16 tab, then find the lines that have "MSB" in them. If the number is anything other than 000, change it to 000. You will need to do this for each channel.

When you're done, resave the file.

If anyone uses Band in a Box, be aware that the new version, when you use GM2 to select voices, does this. PGMusic is aware of the glitch and hopefully taking care of it.

The other program that appears to have the problem is Digital Performer. This one is a bigger challenge in that the message is placed into the file and you can't see it in Digital Performer. We found it using a different program. They are also aware of the situation.
