Hellow,

Can someone tell me if the guide lamps can be used on multiple channels. If I record on channel 1 a piano piece and on channel 2 i put some strings - I only see the channel one guide lamps but no guides for the strings.

And how come that guide lamps for drums never reflect what I actually played (the are seen two octaves down???)

Cheers

Yes. You can assign two channels to the guide lamps. If you turn only one channel on, it'll show up in the top staff only on the score display. If you turn the second channel on, it'll show up in the bottom staff. That takes a little getting used to.

Hi Wally,

I need clarification on something you wrote a couple of years ago (April 2003, above). I have a 206. I've been recording songs to help my daughter with her practice.

I typically like to record the right hand on channel 1 and the left on channel 2. When I setup the score display, I can do the same.

When I tell the CVP to do guided play, the guide lights for left and right show up to prompt her if she makes a mistake.

If I turn the guide function off and let the piano play itself (freely, without waiting on her), only the notes for channel 1 light up. Channel 2 plays, but doesn't "light up".

This only happens for songs I've manually recorded channel by channel. If I take prerecorded songs, say from Yamaha's instruction books, and play them freely (without it waiting on key presses), both channels 1 and 2 will light up the guide lights as it plays.

Could you clarify in your comment below what change I need to make (and save) to get both channels 1 and 2 to activate the lights as it plays?

Yamaha drums, as played from the keyboard, have never matched the Standard Midi drum voices.

"Standard" Midi drums follow a universal voice map, as do the rest of the voices, however these are not in an order that is easy to play from a keyboard. If you look at the drum symbols on the cvp you will find they are grouped together to make it easier to play drum solos. Also as there can be 128 drum sounds, the cvp only has 88 keys, so again, Yamaha have rearranged the sounds.

The guide lamps get tricky because Yamaha has made some assumptions in the playback software (one may even say they're bugs). Apparently the lamps behave differently if the song has an empty (?) track 16. I'm not sure if this applies to your specific needs, but I'm guessing the answer is here somewhere:

Start with that thread (it also refers to an older thread). If you get overwhelmed, let me know. I would only need to sit down in front of the CVP and try a few things in order to get you going.

The key, I think, is that older thread from Avi at:

Adding a muted channel, like 16, with nothing in it. I'll try it tonight to see if it works. It seems like such a hack. I work in digital technical support (h/w and s/w) and this just smells like a workaround to a bug! Thanks for the pointer, Dan. I tried a bunch of keyword searches, but didn't find this thread.
