Hi,

I own a Yamaha P-120 digital piano user. However, the P-120 manual says the Bulk Dump function uses Clavinova MIDI format, so I thought I'd try posting my question here:

I am using the Bulk Dump Function on my P-120 piano. According to the Yamaha Knowledge Base "This format cannot be edited or played and sheet music cannot be printed from it. The Bulk Dump feature is for storage purposes only." This seems to be very limiting. Is there utility software (Yamaha or third-party) which will convert the Bulk Dump into a format which can be edited?

Here is the response I received from Yamaha customer service:

No, if you want to record your songs directly into a computer sequencer program (like Cakewalk) via MIDI, you can then edit the data though. See the attached document for hookup information.

I think I should be able to write my own program to strip off the SYSEX information, but I think the sequence data is stored in ESEQ format, and I can't find any description or specification of ESEQ format online--does anyone have that?

Can anyone on this forum help me? Any info would be appreciated,

Hi

First of all, a "Bulk Dump" is just that, a dump of the contents of the piano's memory. This is just a snapshot of the piano's memeory at that time.

The only people who could read this info would be Yamaha.

You see, it goes like this. You have all of your prossesions in your house and everything has been put somewhere within that house. Now imagine you "Dump" it all outside and then ask a stranger to put it all back the way it was.................impossible.

If you now asked the person next door to do the same, not only would the conntents be completly different but also the way he layed them out.

You see, each piano / keyboard would save its contents differently and only the person who built it (Yamaha) would know where it all went.

Now whatever the format of the dump is, it is NOT in ESEQ format. The ESEQ format is very much like the Midi format and is NOT used in Bulk Dumps.

Midi Magic:

Thanks for the explanation. Still I would be interested in obtaining a description of the ESEQ format, for future reference. If anyone who reads this board has a copy of that, please let me know.

Chris,

How big is the file?
If you can send me a copy, I'll have a look.

I wrote a program that converts e-seq to midi but I'm doubtful your bulk dump contains anything it can recognize. The songs may be embedded in the mess somewhere but writing a program to dig them out will be harder than recording the songs one at a time to your PC over a midi link.
