hi guys
after much searching I found this site and was a bit of a relief to find out that I'm not the only one with this problem.
But its seems as if Yamaha is no longer selling/promoting CLP 950's
I have the same broken key prob. for E below middle C and B immediately below middle C other keys look like they'll be heading in that direction too.
I read previous posts saying that yamaha no longer sells manuals, I tried calling the 800 number mentioned but it says "call cannot be completed as dialed"
I found this site but it doesn't have the manual for CLP 950
http://www.candisc.com/ranger/manuals1.htm
Is there another piano similar to the CLP 950 to get a manual.
Does anyone have a manual for this piano, I will pay for it.
If not, Is there any way for me to repair this problem ?
Thank you

The CLP 970 service manual is available on the web site you listed. The 970 instrument should be mechanically identical to the 950. Give it a try.
If you can't get replacement keys, you may be able to swap a similar key from a remote part of the keyboard (uppermost B and E, for example).

Ken,
Check out this web site. You should find your manual there.

thanks but the above address is for the owner's manual, not the service manual.
Is the CLP 970 really similar to the 950 ?
does the fact that its in the shape of a small baby grand piano change anything ?

The service manual site that you mentioned in your first post has the service manual for the CLP 970. According to Yamaha's Clavinova site http://www.yamahaclavinova.com/clavinova_2003/clp/index.htm
the CLP 950 and CLP 970 have the same Graded Hammer Effect keyboard. Any information about the keyboard in the CLP 970 service manual should apply to the CLP 950.
If you look at the clavinova site above, it shows that the CLP 950 is an upright, not a grand. Is yours a much older model?

You should be able to order a Service Manual and the parts by calling this number....
Yamaha customer service USA
1-800-776-9262
White keys are interchangeable through all octaves but make sure you order the correct note in the octave.
There was mention that service manuals for the 300 series would be on cd's and only available to dealers or service people. I hope it's not true. If it's true, I think I would negotiate a manual as part of the package.

Thanks for all the help
Yes my CLP950 is an upright, I meant that the 970 was a grand sorry if I misled you in anyway.
I guess I'll call the number and see if they agree to a package deal.
If not then I'll have to get a 970 manual. Has anyone ordered from the site I listed above ?
If and when it does get fixed, how can I preven this from happening again ?
Do I have to play softer ?

The 800 number is for ordering the manual & parts directly from Yamaha. I would try that first. Order the manual and see if you feel that you can do it yourself. The keys are relatively inexpensive. The labor costs are the killer.
The package deal I was referring to was only if I were ordering a new 300 series unit from a dealer. Sorry if i wasn't clear on that.
There is no guarantee that the breakage will not reoccur. The problem seems to be with the design of the keys. There is a vulnerable spot on the right rear of the key were the breakage occurs. The fatigue could have even occurred during the manufacturing process.
I don't think playing style has any bearing on it, but rather a luck of the draw situation. I have seen many Yamaha artists doing some serious pounding on the 200's without keys breaking.
