View Full Version : Converting registrations from one instrument to another

I'm trying to convert my registration banks from a CVP209 to a Tyros. The Yamaha knowledge base says to connect the two instruments via a midi cable. Then load a registration on the 209, and it will be transmitted to the Tyros which will choose its closest settings.
I've had some success doing this, but I don't get nearly enough settings transmitted. I get the style setting (A, B, C or D), but I don't get any voices or the transposition setting, for example.
Any ideas of what I need to do to get more data transferred from the 209 to the Tyros?

Fred,
I haven't tried myself, but can you not copy and paste from User memory to Floppy and then to Tyros?

No, you can't copy registration files from one instrument to another.
On the 209, registration files have an extention of .REG (which of course drives Windows wild because it thinks they are Registry files). On the Tyros, the files have an extension of .RGT.
Even if the extension is the same (like it is on PSRs), or I change the extension manually on my computer, the new instrument will not read them.
All of my investigations tell me that registration files are unique to the instrument.

Hi Fred
Think about it. A registration is a "snap" shot of the keyboard at a moment in time.
Lets say you have a house and you take everything out of it and lay to on your lawn. Now, you take everything and ask a friend to put it into his house. It won't go.
1 You don't have the same house so things will not fit.
2 Your friend has no idea where to put anything as it has come from your house.
The same goes for keyboads. The Tyros has things the CVP doesn't and the same the other way round. Also Yamaha stores it in a different place in each keyboard. It would be like asking your friend to put the cooker in the bathroom.
Hope that makes sense !!!!!

Hi Midi Magic,
Your explanation makes sense, especially based on my experience. However, that doesn't mean that Yamaha couldn't have provided a conversion program.
I was able to get my registrations transferred over using a midi cable. I had to adjust specific settings in the Midi Function screen, but the translation went reasonably well. Many balance settings did not come through properly, nor did transpositions (it would set the transposition to 0, but nothing else). Anyhow, I just made adjustments manually.
Given the amount of time I've spent going from one instrument to another, I will think twice before upgrading again. I'd certainly like to see some type of registration conversion program with any new instrument.

Hi Fred
I am glad it made sense.
Here is a site you might find useful. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the programs.
There are programs to convert Music Director Finder files and a MidiPlayer which will convert midi files with Megavoices to normal voices. Also there are Style files programs there.
All the files by Michael P. Bedesem are very good and there maybe something there that will help you.
