View Full Version : Tyros sound effects don't play on CVP

Hi,
I had a chance to work with the Tyros for a while, so I downloaded the excellent Tyros arrangements by Andrew Leitch from the svpworld site. One of his songs very cleverly starts with the sound of rain and thunder to set the mood for "I Will Wait For You" from "The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg". My CVP209 played the song okay but without the rain and thunder for the first 10 to 15 seconds. The sounds are in the 209, but evidently there's some incompatibility in the coding.
All 22 of Andrew's songs are worthy fare for any good-music lover, by the way, - - I highly recommend a listen if you haven't already found them.

Hi
Please note that the Tyros has MEGA voices and the CVP does NOT. If this is not the case then it is just a matter of changing the voice / bank numbers.
You will need to look up the voice numbers in your Reference / Data book.

Hi Chuk
Welcome aboard the group.
I have had a look at the midi file and it has the following:
Channel 5 Seashore
Channel 6 Rain (which the 209 does not have)
Channel 7 & 8 Thunder
It was a case of the Bank Changes being wrong. Bank Changes are used to provide more then 128 voices. If you want a more detailed answer, let me know.
Anyway I have replaced the Rain with the CVP's "Shower" and it seems to be ok.
Give this one ago and let me know if it works.

Yes, Midi, that fixes it. Thanks for the hint.
I'll try to see the MIDI files and understand what you did.

Hi, all
I dug into it and found in the Song Creator 1-16 list some steps that do not appear when you just press the "go-to-beginning" button. If you then go further up, the settings for Rev. Send, Panpot, Volume, Bank MSB, Bank LSB and Program number come into view. This is where the Tyros SFX settings of MSB-LSB-Prog, namely 121-0-122 (maybe seashore), 121-1 122 (probably rain) and 121-2-122 (definitely thunder) come into view for channels 5 ,6,7, and 8. Of course the CVP-209 doesn't have any SFX bank with MSB 121, but it's simple to change the settings in the various channels to 0-0-122 Seashore, 64-0-32 Shower and 64-0-33 Thunder, that we do have.
Thanks, Midi, for pointing me in the right direction. I have some other MIDI songs I downloaded that do not play any melody, but I just hear some drum set action - - should be able to find the voice that's called for in one of the channels that is not available in the CVP and replace it with something we do have.

Hi Chuck
Yes, that's exactly how I did it. Can look confusing at first but it all makes sense in the end.
