I am about to connect the CVP307 to a wireless broadband setup to allow the machine direct access to the internet for downloads etc..

Has anyone any done this successfully - what USB wireless adapter did you choose?

Has anyone tried using a USB hub to allow more than one USB device on the clavinova?

Any advice?

If I do succeed I will post my experiences as I can't see any previous threads for this topic.

Thanks!

I purchased a usb wireless adapter for my CVP305, but I havent hooked it up. Still trying to decide if it's a feature I really need/want. I've been downloading midi and karoake files from the internet for free and transferring them using usb jump drive (memory stick?). I'll probably open the wireless adapter eventually, but still researching exactly what I'll get with that.

If you get there before me, let us know how it goes.

Yamaha kindly supplied an alternative to the broken link (provided in the manual) for recommended network adapters for the clavinova.

http://music.yamaha.com/servicesTypeIDC.html

go to usb info

I've listed them below (pasted from table on their site)

Asterisk denotes the wireless adapters - check their site before you buy

BELKIN USB 10/100 Ethernet Adapter
DLink DWL-122*
DLink DSB-650TX
LevelOne WNC-0101USB 11Mbps Wireless USB Adapter*
HAWKING TECHNOLOGY UF100
LINKSYS Wireless Compact USB Adapter WUSB12*
LevelOne USB-0100TX USB Fast Ethernet Converter
Microsoft MN-510*
LINKSYS USB100M
NetGear MA111*
LINKSYS USB200M
SMC 2662W*
Microsoft USB Adapter MN-110
NetGear FA120
SMC SMC2206USB/ETH
SMC SMC2208USB/ETH
SMC SMC2209USB/ETH

as it happens the usb adapter I tried is a linksys device that works well on my pc but is not listed here and did not work with keyboard (it will now serve as a rather expensive drinks mat for my coffee mug - I think the little aerial will make a delightful storage device for small pretzels or ring shaped snacks and protects my shiny new keyboard from coffee stainsat the same time)

I have ordered the d-link dwl-122 from e-buyer - the cheapest adapter on offer (the yamaha only needs usb 1.1 and my network is a wireless b rather than g)

Delivery awaited.

Postman delivered today.

The first thing I did was to enter my wireless network info, SSID etc. Leaving DHCP as automatic.

I connected the d-link adapter to my small hub connected to the clavinova port. Both little green lights lit on the adapter.

At first just a repeated error message : IP address not assigned.- unable to connect - this message went on for 5- 10 mins. I looked at my network on the router setup and the D-link adapter was included as connected so obviously had a wireless connection running.

Initially nothing - so fiddled with various settings checking full stops spellings etc. and making sure nothing was incorrect after earlier attempts to get a connection.

Eventually decided to use 'DHCP off'and enter DNS manually, assigned my own IP and gateway and subnet all manually.
The DNS servers I got by looking at the network settings on a pc already able to connect to the internet - just copied them

My network settings are the standard home stuff

Gateway (my netgear wireless router) 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
I chose an IP for clavinova 192.168.0.9. (not one already in use on the network)

It connected to the yahama ICD site. Bingo!

I then reset the DHCP back to automatic (which should assign the IP and other settings)

It has carried on working ; the maually entered settings become 'greyed out'.

So for the four tabs on the internet setup my settings that are working are

Tab for Browser - left as defaults

Tab for LAN :

use DHCP ON (set DNS automatically)
other settings are greyed out

Tab for Wireless LAN : set to match my home network

SSID set same name as my wireless network
Channel 1 (same as the channel being used for my wireless network)

Encrpytion (mine is off because Im using a 'trusted pc' network - so I have to enter the MAC address on my router setup: 12 digits for each adapter)

Mostly other wireless users set encryption as on (to protect from unauthorised users) but then the WEP settings will need entering to match those in use on the network. same as on other PCs.

Tab Others

left as defaults

proxy server left blank
proxy port 8080
non-proxy server left blank

So fairly painless once using a recognised adapter was used.

I had a quick look at songs available - when you choose a song it runs a small sample direct on the machine so you hear the clavinova play - of the ones I looked at the price for the songs is 4.50 US dollars.

I thought the classical pieces (chopin) sounded good and will consider subscribing as this would interest me as a way of learning these pieces.

From other comments on the forums I can understand if you are already a slick/seasoned player then these may not offer progress.

When I have had a chance to look at the site further I will post any observations for anyone interested.

Hi
Sounds like you have the IDC connection down - congrats! Watch for much more content - last month along, tons of hit song content went up. Yamaha is spending their budget wisely and hiring programmers who can re-create hit tunes to sound almost like the CD - mute the lead track, play along with the best accompaniment possible... watch for education content and easy play content to hit after January... Lot's of worship tunes for churches, and all types of genres from Country to German pop! Much of the PianoSoft and ClaviSoft titles will be in the system by the first of the year as well... a whole new world, eh!

Thanks for the information - is there a list of prices etc. for subscription to the IDC? - giving out credit card details on the registration site before any indication of costs is off-putting. Apart from the the price on the songs on the site , there is no clear way of knowing what amounts will be charged and if there are any other hidden charges/subscriptions etc.

It would be reassuring to have this information and help make the decision to subscribe easier.

Hi
there is not a subscription - you only pay for the file... you need to set-up credit card info on the site, and then thru IDC, your card will be only charged for the files you download... no hassles...

hope that helps!

Hi!

Don't want to be a stick in the mud, but after months of trying I still haven't been able to get IDC. It certainly has been a hassle for me.

The registration site won't accept non-ascii (american) characters in the credit card name, which I have ('é' and 'ö'). As a consequence the credit card validation fails since I can't key in the name exactly as it appears on the card. Interestingly the one card I have where the name is spelled without national characters is American Express, but they don't accept that card?!

Yamaha Customer Service has stopped answering my mails about it as well.

international version of the website will up and running within the next month...

I am not sure about the emails - you are sending them to your support group within your country, right?

Hi!

If I remember correctly I simply followed the Support link on the registration site. I have been getting lots of replies before, as I struggled through the registration steps, and I believe it's from US. I guess they are waiting for the international site to go live, and then they will reply with the new site address.

PS. Any news about a flash presentation of IDC? Or (as asked by someone else as well) a version that can be viewed with a PC browser?

Brgds

Danny

flash - prob' not, because - if you have an IDC instrument, you can navigate the entire site via your keyboard without the need to provide credit card info... However, there will be a new Flash demonstration of the entire CVP series before NAMM...
