Upon executing the install file (msd400.exe) I get the message "C:\\WINNT\\SYSTEM32\\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application." ACtually, you also have the option to 'ignore' this message. Still nothing happens if I try to ignore it.
My system runs XP Home and I never have any problems running windows apps. In the directory \system32\, there is NOT a file autoexec.nt. It is in \winnt\repair. Anyway, I'd like to download a few songs that I already purchased for a brand new CVP-204 that was delivered Friday.
Appreciate any info!
Thanks, Todd Scholl

Sounds like your XP is having trouble running 16-bit programs (the msd400 installer is running a 16-bit shell). Most new windows programs are 32-bit so you'd never know you had a problem.
Can you run command.com (good 'ol MS-DOS command shell) from the start/run dialog? If not, have a look at this:

Thanks for the reply Dan! You were right on too.
Unfortunately, MSD installed, but when I go to my account at Yamaha Musicsoft and click download, nothing happens. I've never had such difficulty like this downloading a simple file in my life. If they're zipped (XG, etc.) why can't they just open in winzip or winrar and opened to the floppy drive?

Hmmmm, I dunno... I'm not sure I get a warm feeling about your installation of XP. I'm not going to tell you to re-install but give YMS support a call - they'll probably tell you just that. Let me know before you go to any such extreme.
The reason for the downloader program is to create a specially formatted (copy protected) floppy that receives the content of a PianoSoft disk. These disks are any of the older Yamaha proprietary (ESEQ) collections and have always been difficult to copy on a PC (without "special" software) - so I guess they don't want to open them up.
The good news is any newer XG, XF, GM files are all standard midi files and do NOT require the downloader. They are zipped and do just as you say (open in winzip where you can then save them to your floppy or hard drive). If you're having trouble downloading one of these, they should be able to e-mail you a copy.

Hey Dan, you got me thinking , and I finally figured out the problem. It's not XP. It was Internet Explorer and the Yamaha site. For the first time in maybe two years, I tried Netscape Navigator, and low and behold when I clicked on 'download' a window popped up!!!! :D I was in business!! Unreal. I was so shocked and excited, I think I hit cancel at the first window, which essentially does nothing and stops the D/L, after successfully getting the three others midi's, I tried the first again but the Yamaha site had stated that I got it already and wouldn't allow me to get it. No problem though. I can't believe it was IE. Oh well. Thanks for helping me think it through.
So, after loading them in to the CVP (just got it Friday) I was astonished how good they sound. Now I'm psyched! Had my first lesson today too. I'm a total beginner. :D
