I own a vintage Clavinova (CVP-85a) and am interested in only upgrading the “piano” sound. Would my clavinova be compatible with the Yamaha Motif Rack Mount ES or some other sound modulator? The 85a has a Midi in, out, and thru and uses General Midi.

Would this work?

CVP-85a (midi out)---> Motif ES (midi in) ---> Headphones

I just want to update the “piano sound;” I don’t care about the other voices. If you need any other info, just ask and I’ll post.

I used to have an old CLP-250 with the following setup:

CLP-250(mid out)--->Midi Sequencer(mid in)--->Mid Sequencer(Audio Out)---->CLP-250(Audio in)

This configuration would use the Midi Sequencer to add voices and other capabilities, and play through the CLP-250's audio system. It is likely that this would work with any midi device with midi out and audio in.

Hope this might be helpful...

To answer your question very simply....YES.

If you have midi out on any keyboard, you can drive any midi sound module. No other hardware or sequencers are needed. The CVP also has velocity out, so it will make piano sounds more realistic.

One step further, that the other Steve was mentioning, is that you can feed the audio output from the sound module back through the CVP's internal sound system......OR use headphones, as your indicated.
